Are all Julie’s Organic products certified organic? What does it mean to be certified organic?
Yes, all Julie’s Organic products are USDA Certified Organic. This means that our products are made using ingredients that at no time come into contact with synthetic pesticides or artificial fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), artificial growth hormones (rBGH/rBST), or anything that was processed using sewage sludge or ionizing radiation. To achieve the USDA Organic certification, third party certifying agents use a variety of tools to verify that organic farmers and processors aren’t using prohibited substances. These tools include annual on-site inspections and periodic residue testing to ensure compliance. Finally, all USDA certified organic products are regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program.
Are Julie’s Organic products made with GMOs?
No. Under USDA organic federal guidelines, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) are not allowed for use in certified organic products. Therefore, because our products are always USDA certified organic, they are not made with any genetically modified materials.
Are Julie’s Organic products Kosher?
Yes. The California-K or the Heart-K symbol on each package means that we are supervised by Kehilla Kosher of Los Angeles, CA. Kehilla is an internationally recognized Kosher certifier operating under strict Kosher standards.
Where are Julie’s Organic products made?
All of our products are proudly made at our own facility in Eugene, Oregon.
Are the cream and eggs in Julie’s Organic pasteurized?
Yes. All of our ice cream is pasteurized in accordance with Federal law (21 CFR 1240.61) which states: “No person shall cause to be delivered into interstate commerce or shall sell, otherwise distribute, or hold for sale or other distribution after shipment in interstate commerce any milk or milk product in final package form for direct human consumption unless the product has been pasteurized.”
Are Julie’s Organic products gluten free?
Most of our products do not contain gluten-containing ingredients. However, our ice cream sandwiches and our Cookies & Cream pint do contain gluten. These products are made with cookies which contain organic wheat flour. The rest of our products do not use gluten-containing ingredients. Consumers should also be aware that all of our products are made on shared equipment, which sometimes process gluten-containing ingredients. We have a strict allergen control policy, and work hard to prevent cross-contact of allergens. We test every batch labeled “Gluten Free” for the presence of gluten before shipping it to stores. How do you know that your Gluten Free Ice Cream Sandwiches are truly gluten free?
We work hard to control allergens and gluten proteins from the moment ingredients arrive at our facility until the moment the finished sandwiches get shipped to stores. It’s important to note that we do make these sandwiches on shared equipment, and we take several steps to control the cross-contact that can occur on shared equipment. We always identify and segregate any gluten or allergen-containing ingredients in our warehouse. We also complete thorough washes of our equipment and all food contact surfaces, and then we test the equipment and surfaces for the presence of gluten proteins before every batch of our Gluten Free Ice Cream Sandwiches. Finally, we test every batch of our finished Gluten Free sandwiches for the presence of gluten, down to 5 parts per million. We don’t let the sandwiches ship out to stores until they pass this final test. If a batch doesn’t pass this test for any reason, it is destroyed. Are Julie’s Organic products nut free?
While many of our products do not use nut-containing ingredients, our Vanilla Dark Chocolate Almond Bars do contain almonds. Consumers should also be aware that all of our products are made on shared equipment, which sometimes processes nuts and tree nuts, including but not limited to: peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios and coconut. We have a strict allergen control policy, and work hard to prevent cross-contact of allergens, but we do not test finished products for the presence of nut proteins, and cannot claim them to be nut free. Why do you use xanthan gum and soy lecithin?
These ingredients make up less than .3% of our ice cream recipe, but they play a significant role in helping us achieve the best taste and best texture in our ice cream. These ingredients act as stabilizers and emulsifiers in our ice cream. They help to bind water and fat together, which results in the smooth and creamy texture in the ice cream by slowing down ice crystal growth that occurs during freezing and thawing cycles in transportation and handling.
What is the source of your xanthan gum and soy lecithin?
All of the ingredients we use are derived from plant sources: our organic soy lecithin comes from organic soybean oil and does not contain soy protein. Xanthan gum is made from organic sugar that is fermented from non-GMO corn, and no corn allergen remains after the fermentation process.
Is there wheat or corn in the alcohol used in your vanilla flavors?
The alcohol used to make our vanilla extracts is derived from sugar cane.
What kind of sugar is used in Julie’s Organic products?
We use only organic, unrefined cane sugar in all of our Julie’s Organic products.
Where does your palm oil come from?
We take responsible sourcing seriously. That’s why we only source palm oil from one trusted supplier in Brazil. This supplier is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, and has also earned the top spot on Greenpeace’s Scorecard for Palm Oil Producers. They have been recognized for their success in reforestation (over 50% of their land is exclusively dedicated to reforestation), as well as peatland protection, and biodiversity efforts that focus on not only protecting but enhancing the populations of the species living around their farms. Our supplier also partners with the Orangutan Land Trust, which exists to break the link between palm oil and deforestation in a global context.
What are organic cattle fed?
Organic cows are fed a 100% organic diet. They are pasture fed up to 80% of the time, depending on the weather. Common types of pasture include clover, rye grass and native grass blends. The remaining portion of their diet is 100% organic grain. Organic supplements may be used to make sure the cattle have a healthy and balanced diet, however, the producer of an organic livestock operation must not provide feed supplements or additives in amounts above those needed for adequate nutrition and health maintenance.
How are organic cattle treated?
In accordance with the National Organic Program, organic cattle must have ready and easy access to the outdoors, including shade, fresh air and direct sunlight. They are also required to have a decent shelter, clean and dry bedding, a nutritionally balanced diet, and plenty of space for comfort behaviors.
Are organic cows given any antibiotics or artificial hormones?
No. Organic cattle are not given anything besides routine, approved vaccinations. Injections of the artificial growth hormone, rbGH/rbST, are not allowed in organic livestock.
What kind of medicines are allowed for organic dairy cattle?
Organic dairy livestock may not be administered any animal drug, including hormones or any growth promoting drug, other than vaccinations and other veterinary biologics, in the absence of illness. This includes recombinant bovine growth hormone (rbST). If an animal is sick, producers of organic livestock may not withhold medical treatment from a sick animal in an effort to preserve its organic status. When preventive and veterinary biologics are inadequate to prevent sickness, a producer may administer synthetic medications, provided such medications are allowed under federal law. All appropriate medications must be used to restore an animal to health when methods acceptable to organic production fail, however livestock treated with conventional substances must be identified and segregated from the organic herd and shall not be sold, labeled or represented as organic.
What are the living conditions of organic cattle?
Organic livestock must have established and maintained living conditions to accommodate their health and natural behavior. This includes access to the outdoors, shade, shelter, exercise areas, fresh air, direct sunlight suitable for the species, and appropriate clean, dry bedding. Shelters for organic livestock must be designed for natural maintenance, comfort behaviors, opportunity to exercise, appropriate temperature level, ventilation, air circulation, and reduction of potential for livestock injury.
